ISTE Standard 3

ISTE Standard #3: Model digital age work and learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.
Indicator c.  Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats

 Description 
            There are three tools that I have used daily in my classroom during my teaching career that have served as a means to communicate information and ideas to students, parents and peers. These tools are Seesaw, Facebook and Smore.  Through this course I have also determined a new digital age format to communicate using a Learning Management System known as Edmodo. Together, all four of these tools serve as a means to communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers. 

         
Analysis

            I selected Seesaw as a digital format to showcase how I communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers. I use Seesaw to communicate information and ideas with students in multiple ways. The first is though Seesaw's Skills feature. This feature allows me to communicate individual student standard based grades for each individual standard. Each student can click on an assignment and instantly view their grade and/or feedback. I use this feature to assign grades but I can also provide feedback in real time. I can ask students to meet with me for further instruction or provide additional practice. The possibilities are endless and it all occurs in real time. 

Evidence #1


          This piece of evidence displays the "teacher view" of the Skills feature of Seesaw. I cropped out student names that would be seen on the left of the screen. The standards are listed across the top of the image. Beside each student's name is their performance on the standard. The colors represent final proficiency. Red states limited understanding or no evidence of understanding. Yellow represents student may be proficient with the skill but with assistance or partial understanding and green represents proficiency of the skill. The numbers inside of each box represent the "attempts" for that standard. I selected this piece of evidence because it shows how I use Seesaw as a form of digital media to communicate academic performance with my entire class and their families. This piece of evidence meets the indicator because Seesaw is a digital tool that allows me to communicate academic performance with students on all standards. 

Evidence #2


        This piece of evidence shows how I communicate grades and feedback using Seesaw from a student's perspective. As you can see the assignment is uploaded and I have assigned the standard and 3 stars. This feedback was instant after the assignment upload. This evidence was chosen because it shows the student's viewpoint of my interaction using Seesaw. This evidence addresses the indicator because it displays how I used Seesaw as the digital media to share student performance information with individual students.                                                                            

          Another way that I communicate relevant information with students, families and peers is though social media. I use two types of social media in my classroom. I use both a classroom Twitter and classroom Facebook page daily.

           This is a screenshot from my classroom Facebook Page. The images display my students voting to pass a bill that was written by classmates. We used my classroom Facebook page to monitor the votes from all other classrooms to see which bill would be selected for the entire grade to present to our building principal. We used my classroom Facebook page to communicate with the other classes and monitor the votes. The students loved monitoring Facebook and watching the votes roll in. I selected this piece of evidence because it shows how I use the media tool of Facebook to share information with my students. This piece of evidence also matches the indicator because I used Facebook as a form of digital media to share important information with my students.

          This is a screenshot from my classroom Facebook page. I selected to screenshot an image of an announcement I shared with my families. At least one family member from all twenty-eight families in my classroom have joined my classroom Facebook page. I post updates and announcements about upcoming events both inside and outside of our classroom almost daily. I selected this evidence because it displays how I use Facebook to connect with families. This piece of evidence also matches the indicator because Facebook is a type of digital media that I use to share information with families. 

Evidence #5

       Evidence piece #5 is a screenshot of a video that I posted on my classroom Facebook page. In the summer of 2017, I attended the Kagan Cooperative Learning Institute with my building principal and one other staff member. By attending the Institute, there was an expectation to share the knowledge gained with other staff members. The majority of staff members already followed my classroom Facebook page but, those who didn't were invited to like the page for videos and photos of the Kagan Structures in action. Facebook served as a great tool to share the structures and then hold conversations with peers to help them use the Kagan Structures in their own classrooms. I received a lot of positive feedback from my peers by using Facebook to share videos and images for my peers to view on their own time. One of my peers even showed her classroom the videos to teach them how to use the structures. I selected this piece of evidence because it captures one way of sharing new information with my peers. This piece of evidence also matches the indicator because I used Facebook as a form of digital media to share new information with my peers. 

Evidence #6


          Evidence #6 is my weekly newsletter that I create and share using Smore. Each week, I share academic "happenings" in the classroom for each subject. I also share upcoming events, reminders and initiatives in the classroom. I update and share the Smore every Friday. I share the Smore via Facebook, Twitter and Email. I send the Smore via email to families, students and my grade level teammates. This allows me to reach students, families and peers all with one form of digital media. I selected this piece of evidence because it is a type of digital media that I use every week. It is user and reader friendly. I have almost fifty viewers every week so, I know that the information is reaching students, families and peers every week. Evidence #6 meets the indicators because Smore is a type of digital media that allows me to share relevant information with students, families and peers all with the same tool.

        The final piece of evidence that I have included is a screenshot of Edmodo that I plan to use as a learning management system in my classroom next year. I included this as a piece of evidence because I plan to use Edmodo to communicate information with students, families and peers. I plan to share the Edmodo with all students and place daily station rotations and assignments within the LMS. I also plan to connect parents so they can view individual student progress in the LMS. I also plan to speak with my grade level peers to create an Edmodo for the grade level to share. I believe this could help with the sharing of ideas and collaboration. I selected this piece of evidence because I have discovered Learning Management Systems, such as Edmodo, to be a very beneficial tool in sharing information with students, families and peers. This piece of evidence matches the indicator because Edmodo is unique digital tool that will allow me to share information with students, families and peers. I look forward to implementing this tool into my classroom this fall. 

Reflection

       Upon completion of this entry, I have enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on my current processes of sharing information with students, families and peers using various forms of digital media. I found a great strengths of this reflection to be the variety of media tools that I currently using. Seesaw, Facebook and Smore are very different types of digital media tools. I find that each type of media helped me develop a new tech skill while also appealing to various types of students, families and peers. I like to think that I use a communication tool that appeals to everyone. With that said, this entry has also helped realize a great weakness in my classroom. I use Seesaw and Facebook to communication information with parents and peers mostly. I really need to increase the way that I share information with students digitally. I share information with students face to face everyday but, I need to improve their digital information reception. This weakness is why I selected to use Edmodo in this entry. Through my journey in this course, I have learned the power of a strong learning management system used in the classroom. A learning management system allows students to review information at their own pace while also review expectations as much as desired. So, I am thankful for this entry to help me realize that I need to share information with students using a greater variety of digital media. I am excited to try Edmodo as the learning management system to add another type of digital media to share information with students, families and peers.

Learning Management Systems

Learning Management Systems

I have really enjoyed further exploring Google Classroom as a Learning Management System. I used Google Classroom a little last year but, I know I need to conduct further exploration to completely dive into Google Classroom as Learning Management System for the upcoming year. I started by reviewing the timeline of Google Classroom. I found a great timeline from EdSurge. In summary, "Google Classroom launched in August 2014 and advertised itself as the one-stop-shop to save teachers time so they can focus on teaching. By October 2015, Google estimated some 10 million students and teachers were using it" (Siu, 2016). Google Classroom continued to grow and develop. Google Classroom launched new features for teachers to manage multiple classes. "In August 2016, Google added a guardian summary feature for parents to receive updates on their student's work, missing assignments or classroom announcements. Now comments, grading, assigning and working all exist on the free platform build on top of Google Drive" (Siu, 2016). Google Classroom plans to continue to grow and change as needs and technology continue to grow and change (Siu, 2016). I am looking forward to continuing to learn about Google Classroom features. 


Google Features 
After reviewing several Google Apps and pondering the possibility of using Google as a Learning Management System, I found that I loved all features of Google. I love the digital storage element and the collaboration that is possible. Some specific features that I enjoyed is the ability for students to collaboration on Google Docs and Google Slides. My current school district asks for teachers to assign a "grade" to student collaboration. Collaboration on Google Docs and Google Slides would allow me to have specific proof to assign a collaboration grade to.


Another feature that I really enjoyed is the digital storage element. I am excited to create Google Forms as "exit tickets" for mathematics instruction. These forms will be able to saved and accessed any where for years to come. I also like that student responses to Google Forms are saved within the Google Drive and can be accessed instantly from anywhere. This feature will serve as an online data book. I can review student performance data and use it guide my instruction. This feature could save a lot of paper and a lot of time. 


Google as a Learning Management System 
I could see using Google as a Learning Management system because I have used Google Classroom in my own classroom this year. I used Google Classroom as a Learning Management System during my engineering curriculum instruction known as PLTW. I organized the content of PLTW into a Google Classroom. Inside of the classroom, students worked through content at their own pace. Students completed assignments and assessments and submitted them through the Google Classroom. I love using Google Classroom for this content area because it allowed me to arrange all pieces of the unit in one place. This included all instructional materials, videos, assessments, etc. It helped my day to day planning run smooth and student learning had a natural progression. 

I experienced great success with just this unit last year, I can see using Google Classroom as a full time Learning Management System this year. I look forward to trying new features. 

Learning Management System from Classroom Enhancement
In my own classroom I can use a Learning Management system to increase collaboration and creativity. I strive to increase collaboration online because I know there is great importance of digital collaboration in the work force. If I am truly preparing 21st century learners for future careers, I need to ensure I am proving students an opportunity to learn to collaborate online. Also, students can learn so much from each other. A Learning Management Systems provides a safe place for students to learn to collaborate an learn from each other online. A Learning Management System can also help increase student creativity. All Learning Management Systems that I explored allowed students to submit various types of digital files (videos, music, etc.). A Learning Management System would encourage students to create and submit various types of digital projects. The increased type of file submission could inspire greater creativity in project/assignment submission.


Ideal Learning Management System 
The Learning Management System that I would like to use is Google Classroom. I would like to use Google Classroom because I have some experience with it already. I would also like to use Google Classroom because there are so many additional tools and applications to try. My top ten list of features that a Learning Management System needs to have in my classroom are...

1. Collaboration
2. Limited tech issues with Chromebooks
3. Organized feedback system
4. Shared documents/presentation abilities
5. Allows for resource links/integration
6. Works with student email accounts
7. Easy for students to use
8. Allows for directions to be imbedded
9. Allows for assessments to be imbedded
10.Template format that just needs to be edited

Google Classroom is the only Learning Management System that meets all of my desires for a system in my classroom. 

Pros and Cons of Google Classroom 
Upon researching Google Classroom, I found a great review of Google Classroom. I agreed with each statement made in the review stating pros and cons. Some pros of Google Classroom are, "Easy to use and accessible from all devices, effective communication and sharing, speeds up assignment process, effective feedback, no need for paper, clean and user-friendly interface and great commenting system" (Pappas, 2015). My favorite pro is effective feedback. I have a goal of making learning more "visible" this year and I know that feedback will be essential. Google Classroom could aid in the feedback from student to student and teacher to student.

Some Cons of Google Classroom are, "difficult account management, limited integration options, too "googlish", no automated updates, difficult learner sharing, editing problems, no automated quizzes and tests and impersonal" (Pappas, 2015). The con that I am most concerned abut is editing problems. I had trouble with this during the school year. Unfortunately, when students made copies of my document and began edition themselves they could delete certain pieces of the assignment. This caused formatting issues and students re-created assignments. I have learned to always keep an original for students to access in the classroom.

Impact of Learning Management System on Students 
There are several points of impact that a Learning Management System could have on my students. I can speak specially about the impact that Google Classroom made on my students this year. My students became more self-directed learners. I found students diving deeper into the inquiry process because resources/links were readily available to them through the classroom. I also found an increase in student creativity during project completion. Students used a variety of digital tools and resources to complete final projects and assignments. I also found that through having "voice and choice" in assignment completion types, students had greater engagement and higher academic achievement. All of these noticings occurred by using Google Classroom as a learning management system for just one unit. 


Impact of Learning Management System on Parents/Guardians 
I believe there is also a great impact on parents/guardians when using a Learning Management System in the classroom. Parents would be able to see what is truly happening the classroom. Learning objectives/goals would be present inside the system. Also, parents would be able to view student learning progression and assignment completion progressions. A Learning Management System would also provide parents with resources to help struggling students at home. Parents could review material with students who have gaps in their learning. If using a Learning Management system similar to Google Classroom, students could even comment on student work. Overall, a Learning Management System would strengthen the school to home connection helping students and families feel supported in the learning process.

Overall, I am looking forward to further exploration and usage of Google Classroom as a complete Learning Management System in my classroom next year.

Integrating Digital Devices Into My Curriculum

My Decision Making Process
            I decided to add multiple uses of Chromebook devices to my lesson plan this week for several reasons. The first reason, is my students currently use Chromebooks in the classroom. Another reason is, my students enjoying using Chromebooks. I also included Chromebooks because they lend themselves well to conducting research and using various digital collaboration tools with ease. I also considered the four factors for considering a device in the classroom from the reading this week. 

"1. What is the complete range of learning activities that students will engage in? 
  2. What content, applications, and resources (e.g., peripherals) will students require?
  3. How will the devices be managed? What is the true cost of the device?" (Moore, 2014). 

Chromebooks were a great option for each of the factors being considered. The range of learning activities in fourth grade are vast. Students need learning activities from hands on to inquiry. This week I focused on the content area of social studies. Specifically, a social studies lesson about the Branches of Federal Government. The standard support this content asks for students to identify and explain the function of the three branches of government in the federal government. For students to be able to explain the functions, students must have a deeper understanding of the functions and the purpose of the functions. I thought that this information could best be retained through the inquiry process. Students would also benefit from presenting the information to peers. So, for students to complete both inquiry and presentation as the range of learning activities, I thought it might be best to include a device that would allow students to use both inquiry and presentation with a collaborative tool. A Chromebook is the perfect device for the range of learning activities that students will engage in for this lesson. 

As I mentioned previously, the content that will be required for students to research is the function of the three branches of federal government. This research will require access to several government websites. Also, since students will be digging deep into the functions of branches I thought it would be best for students to research one branch in a collaborative group. Then, each group will present so each student will gain the knowledge of all three branches while spending lots of time researching a specific branch that interests the student. For students to work in a collaborative environment to share research and create a collaborative presentation, students will need a resource that will allow students to do so. A Chromebook will allow students to work collaboratively with ease. 

A Chromebook device can be easily managed. Since Chromebooks lend themselves with to G Suite, I can review all assignments that are shared with me. This will allow me to monitor each student's progress on each assignment. The cost of each device is $228.00 according to my school district. My students are already one to one with Chromebooks so, using these devices wouldn't cost anything extra. 

All of Moore's factors lead me to the decision to use Chromebooks as the device in this lesson plan. 

As I previously mentioned, I selected the functions of the three branches of federal government for the content of this weeks lesson plan because, for students to be able to explain the functions, students must have a deeper understanding of the functions and the purpose of the functions. I thought that this information could best be retained through the inquiry process. This inquiry could be completed through self-guided research. Students would also benefit from presenting the information to peers. This would allow students to gain an understanding of all branches of government functions. 

Two Pieces of Technology 
After exploring some new pieces of technology this week, there were two pieces that I am really interested in using in the classroom. The first piece of technology that I am interested in using in my classroom is Livescribe. Livescribe includes a "smart pen" and "smart paper". "The Livescribe smartpen captures everything you hear, write and draw - so you can be confident that you'll never miss a word" (Livescribe, 2017).  I have included a graphic below that show how the smartpen works with several devices. Livescribe could be used in the classroom 


Livescribe could be used in the classroom for students to take notes. In fourth grade, several standards require students to complete research and take notes. If students were able to use Livescribe, their note taking could be more effective which could improve their research. This tool could enhance learning because students could improve note taking skills. If students improved their note taking, they will record more information and gain more information. The cost of Livescribe is a little tricky. The pen itself costs $179.95. One notebook for the pen costs $24.95. A refill set costs $6.95. I would use this piece of technology almost daily. Students are conducting research almost daily in our classroom due to several project based learning projects. The projects require a lot of research and daily note taking to assemble a final product. 

Another tech piece that I would be interested in using in my classroom is ClassFlow. "Designed by teachers for teachers, ClassFlow is cloud-based lesson delivery software with advanced collaboration tools for student engagement. Energize the classroom with interactive lessons, activities, quizzes, and millions of immersive resources from educators around the world" (ClassFlow, 2018). ClassFlow is a digital format for all things that are already in the classroom plus so much more!  ClassFlow is full or pre-created interactive lessons. It also has a platform that lends to student collaboration with an online classroom management system in place. With all of these possible uses in the classroom, this tool could really enhance student learning in the classroom. This tool allows students to be in the drivers seat of their learning. There is individually student engagement, inquiry and pacing possible with this tool. 

The cost of ClassFlow is Free! Teachers can sign up for a free account. I plan to use this tool in mathematics. It would be a great way for students to hear the content they are struggling with again and really interact with abstract math concepts such as fractions and decimals conversions.

Technology Enhanced Learning Enviornments

Digital Citizenship 

How and When to Teach Digital Citizenship

          After reading some of the research and articles from this week, I was led to an article that was written by a kindergarten teacher. This teacher expressed the how and why of teaching digital citizenship in her classroom. She explained the importance of teaching digital citizenship by connecting the importance of teaching students to not trust strangers. "With children spending time online at younger and younger ages, it's vital that we explicitly teach young children how to protect themselves online. Most young children get the "stranger danger" talk at school, so they know about how to handle strangers in their neighborhood and in face-to-face situations" (Hertz, 2017). She continues by listing and explaining places to begin when teaching students to be digital citizens, "First, the transfer of knowledge about how to handle strangers in real life to those in virtual environments is not automatic. It needs to be taught. Second, while most stranger danger programs teach that strangers are scary and mean and want to hurt or abduct children, this contradicts the way collaboration occurs between strangers online. Not all strangers are dangerous. Lastly, in real life students can walk or ran away from a potential threat. In an online environment, the danger is inside a student's home and hard to escape if they don't have the skills necessary for handling tough situations" (Hertz, 2017).  I find that Hertz has listed a starting place for all digital citizen instruction at the primary school level. I believe that digital citizenship should be taught starting in Kindergarten. Students could benefit from hearing this message several times. I believe that each school year should begin with explicit instruction and real-life examples/comparisons between learning the dangers of strangers face to face and online. Followed by explicit instruction and examples that not all strangers online are going to appear scary or mean online. Throughout the year I will continue to provide students with instruction and real life examples of how to escape potential threats or danger online. I will provide students with both success and unsuccessful stories. I will use the unsuccessful stories to brainstorms possible solutions with students. I loved Vicki Davis's ideas of putting students in the teaching position, "Turn students into teachers: You can have students create tutorials or presentation exposing common scams and how people can protect themselves. By dissecting cons and scams, students become more vigilant themselves. I encourage them to share how a person could detect that something is a scam or con" (2017).  By asking students to provide a more desirable outcome of unsuccessful situations I am using Davis's advice and encouraging students to be more vigilant through the experience.
      

The Importance of Students, Teachers and Administration
 Understanding and Practicing Digital Citizenship 
       I believe that anything we ask our students to do we must be willing to do ourselves. As humans we love to see examples of success before trying something new ourselves. We really desire to see someone else "try it, before we buy it". I believe that this mentality would still stand in the world of digital citizenship. Administration is the first that must understand the importance of understanding and practicing digital citizenship. Administrators must serve as good digital citizenship role models while promoting a lifestyle of digital citizenship. To convience Administration I would share the article The Importance of Internet Safety by Heather Wolpert-Gawron. She brings ups several interesting, legal reasons for schools to be involved in digital citizenship. "Our schools must be permitted to better mimic the challenges that exist outside its wall in order to better help prepare our students for those decisions" (Wolpert-Gowron, 2012). Wolpert-Gowren's article appeals to the various concerns of administrators such as legality, student safety, etc.  

         Once administration is convinced of the importance teachers must now see the importance of understanding and practicing digital citizenship. There was one article this week that really showed me the importance as an educator. 

          When thinking about helping students understand the importance of digital citizenship, I think of convincing students that some of their favorite apps/games/social media, etc. could be dangerous. I then see lots of eye rolls and giggling. I can already imagine the difficulty of conveying the importance of digital citizenship to students. My students are already so connected. They all own a personal cellphone. Over half of my students have one or more social media profiles. They are already very deep into the digital world. For students to begin the understand the importance I believe I would need to implement some suggestions from Andrew Marcinek's article,  Digital Citizenship: Developing a Culture of Trust and Transparency. Marcinek calls for school policies regarding technology usage to change to support students usage. "My observation about the need for a semantic shift, probably one of the biggest shifts requited, reflects how acceptable use policies are interpreted by students. Essentially, these policies read more like a legal document rather than a document that students can understand and carry out. Additionally, we need to shift the focus from "you shouldn't do that: to a sense of empowerment around technology. In short, schools should place a positive connotation around technology use" (Marcinek, 2014). Marcinek mentions a great place to begin with students. If students were a part of writing their own usage agreement they would have to review school legislation, district policies and current research. Through this process students would gain an understanding of the importance of digital citizenship. 

Helping Parents Understand Digital Citizenship
Wolper-Gowron also provides great support the importance of parents understanding and practicing digital citizenship. "Schools must help empower parents to be the digital caretakers at home because we can only do so much during the school day. We must teach families simple tools to insist on, and have them extend the culture of cyber safety to the homes. Parents must work hand in hand with schools if our students are to function in this digital world" (Wolper-Gowron, 2012).  Wolper-Gowron detailed a Parent-Tech institute that she held student families. I see great power in this type of gathering. This year in my own district we used Common Sense Media for instruction to our students. I think this would be a great resource to also share with parents at a Tech Night. Hopefully this would encourage students and parents to learn together and hold deep conversations regarding the importance of digital citizenship. 


Dilemmas in Applying Research to the Needs of Students 

        After reviewing all of the research surrounding Digital Citizenship I still worry about a few potential dilemmas in applying the research to the needs of students. Right now my students come from very finically blessed families. My students often have the latests and greatest technology at home. I am worried about keeping up with these new devices. For example, my building uses Common Sense Media for digital citizenship instruction. When completing a lesson during the year the new iPhone was released. One of the lessons surrounded privacy on personal devices such as passwords. The new iPhone can only be unlocked by facial recognition according to my students. One of my students shared during the lesson that he just got the phone for his birthday and he can do whatever he wants on it without this parents knowing because they are unable to unlock the phone without him present. Is there a resource that is shared amongst teachers to aid and support each other with new changes like this? If not, this could become a major dilemma because some of the instructional resources will rapidly be out of date.  

Cost of Technology for Future Implementation in the Classroom 

        I find this piece of the blog most difficult to write. I feel that the cost of technology for future digital citizenship implementation in the classroom is infinite. As I mentioned in my dilemmas comments,  technology is changing so fast I believe that classroom will continue to be forced to invest for future implementation. This will be an ever changing piece of classroom just as the ever changing technology in our world. The sky is the limit of the cost for future implementation in the classroom. 




Collaborative Technologies


  Decision-Making Process 
       For me, the decision making process behind creating a lesson with collaborative technology was simple. I picked a collaborative technology that my students have some experience with and that is well support on students one-to-one devices. I selected Google+ to provide collaborative technology in my classroom. I selected Google+ for many reasons but, the first reason is my students are already familiar with G Suite. All students in my building work with G Suite in third grade. Students begin collaborating with Google Slides and Google docs while also completing Google Forms starting in third grade. When students come into my fourth grade classroom this steam of familiarity continues. Students use some form of G Suite every day. G Suite is the natural selection for most teachers in my building because our students are one to one with Chromebooks. Students experience minimal amounts of tech issues when using G Suite on their devices. Since students are familiar with G Suite and Google is well supported on our devices I selected Google+. I know that students will be familiar with the tools, have access to a Google Account already and have strong understanding of basic Google functions/troubleshooting. 
    Outside of these benefits, I also really enjoyed the options that Google+ provides. I loved the idea of a safe social media experience with Google+ Stream. I know this would be a high engagement tool for students but, a great resource to teach students how to collaborate online safely. There are many safety options that would allow me to block content that I wouldn't want students to view. To me, Google+Steam is teaching students to use social media but, with the training wheels on. Another tool that really persuaded me to select Google+ is Google+ Circles. I loved this tool because as I transition to blended learning in my classroom, I would like to use the station rotation blended model. This model asks for students to work in small group rotations. I could create Google+Circles for specific stations or groups of students. This would help keep student collaboration purposeful and easy to organize. 

Dilemmas in Applying Research to Specific Student Needs
            Even though I selected Google+ for a collaborative technology to use in my classroom, I acknowledge some dilemmas in applying the research surrounding collaborative technology to my specific student needs. Specifically, there is one digital challenge. Research supports a need for even the youngest students to engage in collaborative technology opportunities."As citizens of the world, students in today's classrooms seek global context for learning. Opportunities for networked and international collaborations are bringing both the world to the classrooms and classrooms to the world" (Williams, 2015). Google+ does have an age restriction. Google+ asks for all users to be 13 years of age. My fourth graders are still 9 and 10 years of age. There are some possible solutions to this dilemma. "There are ways to deal with this if you'd like to use Google+ with younger learners, including parents signing up for access, or simply using a single class account while at school" (Heick, 2012). 
             Another dilemma in applying research to specific student needs surrounds the collaborative learning physical space. Research provides various ideas for creating collaborative learning in the physical classroom space, most of these ideas support expensive technology tools. For example, a collaborative learning article provides this suggestion for creating a collaborative physical space, "an Apple TV added to a mounted flat-screen television lets you mirror devices during project sessions. Physical spaces can then be connected to virtual spaces through creativity and productivity apps" (Williams, 2015). I would love to be able to connect the physical environment of my classroom to the virtual environment in this way but, I am unable to afford that technology in my classroom. My classroom for next year doesn't even have a projector screen as it is becoming a Title 1 school. So, I find there to my some financial challenges with ideas that research suggests as best practices for creating this type of environment. However, there are other ideas supported in research that are far less expensive.
Cost of Technology 
             Sharing this blog through the length of an entire graduate course, I spent some time reflection on my previous entry. I found my previous response to a similar question very interesting. My former response to cost of digital citizenship technology was, the cost will be infinite. I find this to still be true in some aspects of integrating collaborative technology but, throughout this course, I have found this isn't always true. This course has shown me a vast variety of free collaborative technologies. The Google+ technology that I selected to use in my own lesson plan is completely free. There are now so many free options to integrate collaborative technology into the classroom there is no reason to not have some type implemented in the classroom. I was surprised at my own jump in knowledge between this blog post and my prior post. I am very fortunate for a new perspective and new tools to accept the challenge. 
Ideas for Future Implementation 
          At this time, I am currently enrolled in the Blended Learning course. Within the course, I just learned about several projects that connected students with other classrooms all around the world. Professor Smokorowski shared several projects where she integrated collaborative technology with other classrooms all around the world. One project really stuck out to me. This project was the Exchanging Hope Project. This project allowed for her classroom of students to collaborate with a school in Africa. The school is Africa created art project for Mrs. S's library and Mrs. S's students raised money for the school in Africa. It sounded that both both classes learned so much about each other through collaborative technology. Students communicated with the tool Skype. I would love to implement Skype usage similar to Mrs.S's in my own classroom. I would like to find a classroom in our state and a classroom in another country to collaborate with on a project. I will create a project similar to Mrs. S's project where she identified the passions and needs of students and designed the project around both. 
Collaborative Technology for Teachers
          I found several types of collaborative technologies. I picked a few collaborative technologies that I could use inside my building and few that could connect me with teachers all over the world. The first technology is a collaboration tool that could be used within my own building known as Slack, "Picture a virtual chat room, open 24/7 on ongoing, where you can type instant messages, tag others, add hashtags, and save key comments you don't want to forget" (Maldonado, 2018).  Another collaborative technology that I discovered through my research is WikiEducator, "because of their sharing, editing and discussion capabilities wikis are a great tool for sharing and editing a major effort, such as how your district plans to transition to Common Core of developing a new reading assessment strategy for your school" (WeAreTeachers, 2012). My favorite collaborative tool to use with other educators, that I use daily with teachers all over the world, is Twitter. I love to see photos and read articles from teachers from all content areas and districts. I find something everyday to read or download to use in my own classroom. This is my favorite collaborative technology because it allows me to connect on my own time with millions of people. 

Ideas/Lessons From Other Teachers
        Most of my ideas/lessons that I have stole from other teachers comes from Professor Smokorowski and her live session in my Blended Learning course. She shared so many projects that allowed her classroom to collaborate with each other and students/professionals from all over the world. Within this blog, under the "Ideas for Future Implementation" section, I described one of Mrs. S's projects that allowed her students to collaborate with other students in Africa. Another collaborative technology that I am going to use is part of Mrs. S's squiggle project. This project uses both a Weebly and Skype. I am looking forward to using both collaborative technologies and this project in my own classroom.

Serious Gaming 

Decision-Making Process for Serious Gaming


            My decision-making process in using serious gaming in my classroom surrounds practices that I am already using in my classroom. When I first read the research and readings from this week, I began picturing a group of students from my classroom this past year. This group of students struggled with engagement constantly which led to various academic challenges. Small instructional tasks often proved challenging. The type of students who were discussed in this week's research and Ted Talks who benefit from serious gaming in the classroom perfectly depicted the group of students in my classroom last year who struggled with engagement and academic performance. "Digital classroom games are especially helpful for students who struggle in school. In one recent study, nearly half of teachers surveyed reported gaming can significantly motivate low-performing students and improve their mastery of both academic content and skills such as critical thinking and communication" (Chen, 2016). So, after physically picturing past students who would benefit from gaming in the classroom, I was ready to decide on the type of serious gaming that I would like to use in my classroom. I decided to pursue simulation in the classroom.

          I selected simulation as the type of serious gaming to use in the classroom for multiple reasons. The first reason that I selected simulation is due to the use of PBL's in the classroom already. This year I integrated several PBLs into my classroom. One of the largest PBLs that I implemented surrounded the causes of the American Revolution. The final project was to write a persuasive essay from one perspective of the American Revolution that detailed one of the causes leading to the Revolution. Within this PBL I would like for students to have more of a real life experience. I quickly Googled simulations for American Revolution and found several quality examples. I really enjoyed PBS's Road to Revolution simulation game and Mission 1 of Mission US. There were several examples of simulations that could really add quality learning experiences to the PBL. I believe I would pick two or three quality simulations to include throughout the PBL. Since the focus of PBLs are real world application and learning experiences, simulations would be the perfect addition. Another reason that I selected simulations as a serious gaming option in my classroom the option for collaboration. Simulations can often include multiple players at the same time. Even some of the American Revolution simulation examples that I quickly browsed allowed for multiplayer collaboration. Just at the research from this week stated, "Game playing encourages collaboration, peer validation, and a different kind of teamwork than is often found in traditional group projects. Teachers are able to prompt more introverted students to speak up, and to connect with students who are otherwise difficult to engage" (Chen, 2016). As I mentioned previously, the readings from this week have made me think of a specific group of my students from the prior year who struggled both academically and with engagement. A multiplayer simulation could have supported this group of students who struggled. I wish I would have been able to provide the option of simulations often.

Dilemmas in Applying Research 
          Even though I related to the research about serious gaming this week, I found a few possible dilemmas in applying the research into my own classroom. In one of the articles from this week there was a section designated to "debunking" common myths about gaming in the classroom. "Myth: Students today are turning into zombies, glued to their games 24/7. Truth: Children and teen are drawn to novelty and technology, especially when their peers are interested as well. Instead of trying to dissuade them, we can make the most of students' passion for and easy access to gaming" (Chen, 2016). I spotted one dilemmas that was specific to my classroom last year. There were only three of my students who would have been interested or carried a passion for gaming. A lot of my students were serious athletes and didn't find much enjoyment in games and our social media. I personally think it isn't fair to assume that all students will share the same passion for gaming. I believe that is should be a learning experience for all students but shouldn't become the entire classroom because there are still students who don't find enjoyment in gaming. Also, I do wonder if there would be a difference when low socio-economic students. Would the socio-economic status of students change the passion for gaming? There wasn't much mentioned in the research but, I don't think I am ready to generalize that all students will share a passion and greater engagement for gaming in the classroom. 

Cost of Technology
       To implement simulations into the classroom, there doesn't appear to be any cost. On my brief search of simulations for fourth graders, I haven't found a single simulation that costs any sort of fee at all. I haven't explored very many simulation options yet but, thus far all are free. This is exciting for me because there is absolutely no reason to not use simulations in the classroom. I will be more likely to use them in the classroom because there appears to be no cost to teachers. I am sure there are some simulations that charge a small fee but, I haven't found any yet. 

Ideas for Future Implementation 


         As I briefly explained prior in this blog post, I would love to use a simulation during PBLs. I would really love to use some of the simulations I found during a brief search to teach students about the causes of the American Revolution. I can really see a large use of simulations to add the real life experiences to several PBLs throughout the year. I look forward to continuing my search for free fourth grade content simulations.

Emerging Technologies for Fourth Grade


Technology in my Classroom

         The current status of technology in my classroom includes all of my students are one-to-one with Chromebooks. Students use their Chromebooks daily to conduct research and complete assignments. Some other small pieces of technology in my classroom include; a media projector, overhead sound with Bluetooth connect-ability and a document camera. Daily use of technology in my classroom from a student perspective includes using Google Classroom at the start of every day to check our "Daily Agenda". The agenda is full of links to morning work options that include a type of digital game, assessment or lesson. Students leave their own devices prior to the lesson for each subject during the day. After the mini lesson students return to their devices at some point during rotations/centers. This use includes assessment, videos, games, collaboration opportunities, reflection and personalized menus. 
         The direction that I would like to head with technology is further personalization. Towards the end of this year I just started exploring personalization through "personalization menus". My building principal provided a few ELA examples for our building to experiment with. One example covered the topic of Figurative Language. This menu looked similar to a game board, I have provided a screenshot of the board below. Each square of the game board focused on a specific type of figurative language. Students were to explore each resource in each box. When the students completed a box they filled in the box. I used this board with my students because figurative language is a major focus of our curriculum. My students loved the board. They asked to use boards like this one more often. All of my students were proficient with figurative language standards by the end of the unit. So, I would love to continue improving personalization using technology in the classroom. This is just one example but, it was enough to convince me that personalization needs to be my focus in upcoming school years.

My Top 3 Elements of a 21st Century Classroom
      My top 3 elements of a 21st century classroom are collaboration, creativity and communication. My top element is collaboration because work place environments are calling on staff members to collaborate more. If we are preparing students for the 21st century workplace we must teach students how to respectfully share ideas on a vast media of platforms. This includes face to face and digital environments. 
      My second element for 21st century classrooms is creativity. Students are living in a world of personalization, constant change and constant choices. I believe that teachers who are seeing an increase in student push back are not allowing students to be apart of the creativity process. When students have "voice and choice" in the classroom they feel more empowered and ready to take on challenges that interest them. 

      The third element for a 21st century classroom is communication. 21st century students are raised with several tools to stay in constant communication outside of the classroom. With a large majority of students having access to WiFi, cellular devices and data and Social Media students are used to constant communication. It only makes sense to embrace this desire in the classroom for education use. Teachers now have the opportunity to teach students how to be quality digital citizens while also students content knowledge. Allowing students to use a safe communication digital tool can inspire students to collaborate and ask questions in real time from peer and teachers. 
  
    All three of these elements are part of our students' daily lives. It is our turn to embrace these elements and change the classroom environment with our 21st century learners. 

Type of Learning Environment 
      The type of learning environment that I would like to create for students is an environment that helps students feel safe in failing. I want my environment to support "failing forward". Previously I discussed my top three elements of a 21st century classroom. These are elements that I desire to be in my ideal environment but, these elements won't be successful without a "failing forward" supportive culture. I know that this environment is essential for our world of constant communication. We must build environments for our children/students that support each other instead of provide constant opportunities to tear each other down. 
       I also want to create a learning environment that encourage student voice and choice. I believe that personalization helps student become deeper learners because each student is making a choice about their learning. This could include choice in subject matter, types of final projects, assessment, etc. Allowing students to have a voice increases engagement. Increased engagement increases student achievement. 

Resources to Create the Desired Learning Environment
        The first resource that I have to create my desired learning environment is Conscious Discipline. This is a management resource that has changed my entire classroom environment. This resource has helped me understand how to help student manage emotions and overcome challenges. This is a helpful resource when working with challenges of the 21st century because it helps students embrace change, challenge and critical thinking. These are all required to be mindful and guide ones individual path toward successful personalization. Another resource that I have to help me create this learning environment is my building learning and innovation coach. Our innovation coach is full of several ideas and resources to help create a learning environment that matches individual teaching styles. I am looking forward to sharing this blog with her and discussing possibilities for the upcoming school year. 

I love reflecting on technology in the classroom. I love throwing out resources that are out of date and jumping in with new technology to improve student success. Technology is such an essential piece of today's classroom environment.
